GAC Motor, China’s fifth largest automaker by volume, is keen on selling vehicles in the U.S. Last year, it got one step closer to its goal by opening a new design studio in California. Now, the automaker is showing off its first concept birthed from the studio, a seven-passenger EV known as the Entranze.

Like many new concepts, the vehicle doesn’t look like a traditional crossover or sedan. Instead, GAC describes it as a multi-purpose vehicle, and it was created with the American road trip in mind. The driver and passengers enter the cabin through patio-inspired sliding glass doors. Inside, you’ll find room for seven. There is a three-person bench seat in the front row, followed by two more rows with two seats each. Two screens flank either side of the instrument panel. The model also features a square-shaped steering wheel with illuminated touch controls around the perimeter.

Many elements are inspired by aviation, given that the studio is headed by executive design director Pontus Fontaeus, who has not only designed Ferraris and Land Rovers but also commercial aircraft interiors. Everything from the seat design, HVAC vents, and storage trolley that slides between the seats is inspired by the world of aviation.

The model features an EV powertrain, although GAC didn’t go into specifics. But the powertrain is not the only way the car is staying green. More than 90 percent of the interior parts are made from sustainable materials including cork.

Last year, GAC planned to break into the U.S. market in 2019. Now, we learn from our colleagues at AUTOMOBILE that the launch has been pushed back to the first half of 2020
